Sacrament of Holy Baptism:
The waters of Baptism bring us new life as God’s children. The waters clean and purify us from original sin and enable us to “move on” to a new life as followers of Jesus.  Baptism admits us to God’s family, making us children of God, members of the People of God.  It is our doorway into the Church.  Once we have been baptized, we can take part in the other Holy Mysteries.

Baptism and Chrismation (Confirmation) prepare believers for participation in the Eucharist. If Baptism incorporates the candidate into the Church, it also enables him to have access to the Holy Eucharist which is the cause and manifestation of that incorporation.

Rite of Baptism

Greeting and blessing.  The priest prays that the person being baptized will be protected from evil and given a second birth into the life of the trinity.

Anointing with oil.  The priest anoints the candidate with the baptism oil on the forehead in the form of the cross. The baptism oil is blessed oil symbolizing strength and protection from evil.

Baptism with water. This action may take one of two forms immersion or infusion.  The celebrant pronounces “[name of candidate] is baptized a lamb in the flock of Christ, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit for eternal life.”

Vesting with a white garment. The white garment symbolizes the robe of glory to begin a new way of life living by the values of the Gospel.
